It’s the first Monday in May, which means that fashion’s biggest night out — the 2024 Met Gala — is upon us.

This year’s theme, “The Garden of Time,” was inspired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibit, and celebrities channeled the seasonally appropriate brief into some seriously jaw-dropping beauty looks.

Although this time of year is typically synonymous with pastel palettes, celebrities went in darker, more sultry directions. And because of that tendency, florals for spring really did feel groundbreaking, courtesy of the statement-making, avant-garde glam that A-listers brought to the red carpet.

Early in the evening, Zendaya proved she deserved to host with pencil-thin eyebrows and 1920s makeup that made her look straight out of a gothic fairytale fever dream. Meanwhile, Emma Chamberlain showed just how glamorous the grunge aesthetic can be with grease-coated hair tendrils and a matte smokey eye.

Intrigued? Keep scrolling to see the best hair and makeup looks from the 2024 Met Gala, and get ready for inspiration that’ll last until next year.

Sydney Sweeney’s Jet-Black Bob

Sydney Sweeney completely transformed her usually beach-blonde look with a shaggy bob in an unrecognizable jet-black color.

Zendaya’s Gothic Makeup

Zendaya knows how to shut down a red carpet, and she didn’t disappoint at this year’s Gala. With pencil-thin brows and a sultry burgundy color palette, she wore ’20s-esque makeup with an unexpected gothic twist.

Ariana Grande’s Fairy Wing Eyes

Ariana Grande went full-on fairy princess, wearing opalescent fairy wings on the outside of her eyes, along with an extra-long, super-sleek ponytail.

Emma Chamberlain’s Grunge Glam

Emma Chamberlain recently told Bustle that she’s “going through a weird goth phase,” and it seems her infatuation with sultry grunge glamour reached an all-time high at this year’s Met. As for her hair, hairstylist Sami Knight used the Angelstick and Mini Boar Bristle Brush from Emi Jay to keep her strands sleek.

Lana Del Rey’s Branch Headpiece

Kendall Jenner’s Butt-Grazing Lengths

Kendall Jenner wore wavy extensions, which were so long that they skimmed her (visible!) butt crack. Amping up the fairy vibes even further were two nostalgic twists at the crown of her head.

Karol G’s Elven Ears

Karol G channeled Lord of the Rings Arwyn with platinum lengths, wispy lashes, and elven ear prosthetics.

Rita Ora’s Mermaidcore Hair

The forever-favorite “wet” look was back on this year’s red carpet thanks to this mermaidcore moment from Rita Ora. She paired her gelled-down, tousled strands with a green smoky eye and pale pink lip that complemented the colors of her dress.

Tyla’s Sandy Body Makeup

Inspired by “the sands of time,” Tyla paired her textured sandstone gown with sparkling sandy body makeup. Her sun-drenched skin and ultra-sharp wing was created using Pat McGrath Labs.

Jennifer Lopez’s Tousled Topknot

While Jennifer Lopez’s glittering gown was decadently structured, her caramel-colored hair was styled in an undone, textured topknot. The trick to this look’s undone finish? The Tangle Teezer The Ultimate Styler, which stylist Lorenzo Martin used to make things look intentionally messy.

Ashley Graham’s Spiked Bangs

Ashley Graham’s understated makeup made her spiky bangs the centerpiece of her beauty look. According to Graham’s stylist, Justine Marjan, the “pixie bangs and sleek updo are reminiscent of a dark fairytale,” and were locked in place using Tresemmé’s Extra Hold Hairspray.

Ayo Edebiri’s Statement Blush

Ayo Edebiri made a strong case for statement blush. Her pigmented pink cheeks were the star of her look — that is, until she turned around to show off a crystal floral hair clip.

Emily Ratajkowski’s Y2K Updo

Emily Ratajkowski’s slicked-back updo brought an element of Y2K-chic to the red carpet, thanks to sculptural spikes and segmented curtain bangs.

Elle Fanning’s Glass Skin

Elle Fanning matched her glass skin to her glass gown, courtesy of L’Oréal’s plumping Hyaluronic Acid Serum and complexion-quenching Water Cream. To amp up Fanning’s luminosity even further, her makeup artist applied a layer of True Match Lumi Glotion in shade 901 under her foundation.

Eiza González’s Romantic Ponytail

Going for full-on romance, Eiza González tied her Rapunzel curls into a dreamy low ponytail, which she accessorized with chiffon bows. Her pale pink makeup matched her rose-inspired dress.

Dove Cameron’s Cherry Lips

Matching the crimson tones in her extravagant floral gown, Dove Cameron rocked red-tinted blush and a cherry red lip. Her radiant complexion was created using Beautyblender’s Bounce Skin Tint, which promises 12 hours of wear and is perfect for a night of nonstop photos.

Amanda Seyfried’s Silver Chrome ’Do

Chrome nails may have been dethroned by chrome hair. The coolest thing about Amanda Seyfried’s metallic look, IMO, is how electric her berry purple lip looks against the monochromatic hair and dress.

Kylie Jenner’s Clean Girl Look

Kylie Jenner is known for bold beauty looks, which is why her simple 2024 Met Gala glam feels so unusual. She embraced the clean girl aesthetic with neutral makeup and made an elegant statement with a single pink rose tucked into her updo.

Alexandra Daddario’s Unicorn Tears

The award for “most creative use of highlighter” goes to actor Alexandra Daddario, who used a smattering of glitter under her eyes to create the effect of what can best be described as “unicorn tears.” She used the same golden shimmer on her lids and topped off the look with an intricate gold headpiece.

Gigi Hadid’s Retro ’60s Bob

Kim Kardashian may have been the Marilyn Monroe of last year’s ball, but this year Gigi Hadid channeled the iconic blonde instead. She fashioned her hair in a ’60s-inspired bob, pairing it with a red lip and — in true Marilyn fashion — a whole lot of diamonds.

Amelia Gray Hamlin’s Wet Strands

In another one of the night’s “wet” looks, Amelia Gray Hamlin slicked down her long strands and gelled a few pieces to her chest so that they’d peek out beneath her chunky gold necklace. Her vampy purple lip was a statement-making final touch.

Kim Kardashian’s Platinum Hair

Kim Kardashian is bleached blonde again. She paired her silver dress with hair so platinum that it nearly matched, finishing the look with nude makeup.

Rachel Zegler’s Ice-Blue Eyeshadow

Considering that Rachel Zegler is set to play Snow White in the live-action remake, it’s no surprise that her Met Gala glam gave Disney princess energy. Her icy blue eye shadow matched the embellishments on her dress in a way that felt equal parts Cinderella and Tinkerbell, and her romantic waves were created by hair guru Clayton Hawkins using Dove products and the Mane 1” Curling Iron Styling Attachment.

Michelle Yeoh’s Sirencore Waves

Michelle Yeoh looked every bit of a sultry siren at the 2024 Met Gala with her shoulder-length hair styled in wet waves. Celebrity hairstylist Marty Harper used FEKKAI to nail the ’90s-inspired glam moment.

Kerry Washington’s Rose Gold Makeup

Instead of taking the night’s springtime theme literally, Kerry Washington embraced floral tones in her makeup. Her chrome pink eyeshadow was created using Bobbi Brown’s Rosey Nudes Eyeshadow Palette and Long-Wear Cream Shadow Sticks in Shell and Incandescent.

Kelsea Ballerini’s Flower-Filled Updo

Made to be a perfect match to her flower-filled gown, Kelsea Ballerini tapped hairstylist Peter Lux to create her floral updo with a single romantic tendril framing her face. He used Pantene everything to achieve the look.

Keke Palmer’s Artsy Face Gems

Keke Palmer’s monochromatic gold makeup would have easily made this list, but she added face gems and a super-sized pony, which took the look to (literal) new heights.

Doja Cat’s Metallic Tears

All eyes were on Doja Cat, who had perfectly black-lined eyes and metallic gunmetal tears streaming down her bronzed face. As for the exact makeup used on the singer? You can thank Pat McGrath Labs.

Lily Gladstone’s Sapphire Eyes

If you’ve been looking to mix up your usual grey-toned smoky eye, look to Lily Gladstone as inspiration. The metallic blue in the inner corners of her eyes added a brightness to the look, which paired brilliantly with her berry lip.

Jessica Biel’s Bohemian Tresses

Jessica Biel went full flower child by matching her makeup to her coral gown. Her hairstylist, Adir Abergel, wanted the look to feel straight out of a romantic French garden, and used the Kristin Ess 1 1/4” Curling Iron to create her woke-up-like-this waves.
